The Archaic Period
The Birth of the City-State and the Great Transformations
(ca. 700–480 BC)

1. Introduction

The Archaic Period is the era during which the Greek world acquires its fundamental characteristics: the city-state, political institutions, colonization, a monetary economy, and systematic artistic expression. It is a period of dynamic change, social tensions, and institutional innovations that lead directly to Classical Greece.

2. Chronology & Historical Framework

Phase Chronology
Early Archaic 700–620 BC
Middle Archaic 620–560 BC
Late Archaic 560–480 BC

📌 The end of the period coincides with the Persian Wars.

3. The City-State (Polis)

🏛️ Structural elements

  • Asty (urban core)

  • Agora (political & economic center)

  • Acropolis (religious–defensive center)

  • Chora (rural hinterland)

🔹 Social groups

  • Small landowners

  • Artisans & merchants

  • Dependent populations

📌 Social inequalities lead to civil strife and reforms.

5. Legislation & Early Institutions

⚖️ Lawgivers

  • Draco (Athens)

  • Solon (Athens)

11. Toward the Classical Period

At the end of the Archaic period:

  • political consciousness is strengthened

  • institutions mature

  • the concept of the city's freedom emerges

The Persian Wars will be the catalytic event.

Conclusions

The Archaic Period:
✔ gives birth to the city-state
✔ organizes institutions and laws
✔ creates a global Greek network

Without it, Classical Greece could not have existed.
